INTRODUCTION
A new preset Takumar to introduce a new 105mm focal length. AOCo claimed in Asahi Pentax S2 operating manuals that this lens and the semi-automatic version ("Auto-Takumar") that quickly followed are built on the barrel of the Takumar 1:1.9/83. The latter was discontinued halfway through their joint reign.
The 105 Takumar is a more versatile portrait lens than its stated predecessor because the focusing ring travels further allowing more accurate focussing and the closest focus distance is reduced by more than half. Both 105mm lenses and the new semi-automatic Auto-Takumar 1:1.8/85 which followed them remain together in catalogues until Super-Takumars of the same focal lengths arrived. All three claimed precedence in portraiture in the AOCo literature.

DESCRIPTION
A preset lens made with 4 separate elements in a telephoto construction. It shares the same serial number prefix (No), an 8 blade diaphragm and 46mm diameter filter rings with the longer and heavier Takumar 1:3.5/135. It weighs 270g; halfway between the weights of the Takumar 1:1.9/83 (305g) of similar appearance and size and the now discontinued and longer Takumar 1;3.5/100 (230g).

Collaring the barrel is a focusing ring with a distance scale on the trailing edge. Turning this ring anti-clockwise through the maximum 280 degrees moves a helical mechanism to focus at the minimum distance of 1.2m. All lenses have dual distance scales in feet and metres as below and none have an IR mark.
Feet ∞ 100 50 30 20 15 10 8 6 5 4.5 4
Meter ∞ 30 15 10 7 5 4 3.5 3 2.5 2 1.7 1.5 1.3 1.2

All except those copies in the first 3 batches (SN 1728xx - 1876xx ) have aperture rings as below. The early batches lack the four half stops marked with dots (as below) and have 7 instead of 11 available settings.

VARIATION
- All have white Feet / Meter units on their depth of field scales until SN 442xxx when the numerals become blue and yellow, respectively.
- Copies in the first batches lack the 4 half stops (marked by white dots) on their aperture rings and have 7 instead of 11 available settings.
- On early copies serial numbers follow the name but from 311xxx onwards they precede it.
NOTES
LENS PRODUCTION (∑ lenses) ∑n = 220 serial numbers (SN) observed in 25 batches covering 5,052 SN min.< ∑ lenses < 8,246 SN max.
SN min. = accumulated total of serial numbers observed within 25 batches
SN max. = accumulated total of serial numbers observed between adjacent batches of other lenses.
Styles: ▼ SN with prefix "No" follows the name ▲ / ▼ ▼ Coloured distance scales.
