INTRODUCTION
Model 37101 is the most abundant Super-Takumar. It makes up approximately 5% of all screw-mounted Takumar lenses. Sales peaked with the popularity of the SPOTMATIC. A large gap of unused SN's occurs during production of this lens. The gap precedes the completion of the Mashiko plant in Tochigi Prefecture and the production of the first 6x7 format cameras in 1969.
It sustained the largest single batch of Takumars ever produced (approximately 80,000). This reflects the optimism and financial support needed for the many changes taking place in Asahi Optical Co.. It participated in the introduction of the capitalised name "TAKUMAR" and the descriptor "Super-multi-coated" first used on 6x7 TAKUMAR and M42 TAKUMAR -ZOOM lenses, respectively.
Red SN 2401935 and 4043678 are found on this model shortly after production passed 100 thousand and 500 thousand before and after completing the factory. The latter in the very next batch of 13,000 copies; at the total of approximately 508 thousand copies. A red serial number later appears on single known copies of several other models in similar circumstances (See Takumarology). These seem to be commemorative or display copies.
Later copies of this lens have serial numbers that overlap considerably with with 37104 and 37106 so it pays to check both the name and model of lenses found in the range. Copies in this range were also furnished with nameplates made for 37104 bearing the name "Super-multi-coated TAKUMAR".
