NOTES
- Production of this popular lens began confidently with 4 batches of approximately 3,000 copies each, followed by a large batch of 30,000 copies. Serial numbers from the first 2 batches are consecutive and all bear the correct model number (43542) and full aperture metering function.
- However names on the bezels alternate between the new and old (Super-Takumar) model (see below) in a manner that suggests bezels bearing the name of the new model were available only in 4 successive runs of approximately 3,000 each, or were given, deliberately, to those with no super-multi-coated lens elements.
- One suggestion is that copies with the new (correct) bezel were used on Super-multi-coated bodies or, as each supply was exhausted, bezels from the previous model (the "Super-Takumar") were substituted up to three times until more new bezels became available. At least 3 groups of Super-Multi-Coated Takumars with product numbers 43542 masquerade as "Super-Takumars". (These would have non-super-multi-coated lenses?) The just-in-time method of parts production and temporary suspension of assembly lines may account for this result or a dedication to using all supplied parts, parsimoniously, rather than discarding them. Names in the larger following batch were apparently unaffected; supply difficulties having been overcome. (NB.Current research reveals 2,000 unallocated serial numbers between the first two batches which implies a halt in production but doesn't explain the gap in serial number allocation).
- Comparison of the reflected light colouring the rear element may resolve the possibilities. My observation suggests the Super-Takumar colour is warmer.
- This issue affects the overlaps found during similar transitions of other focal lengths. Others have interpreted the naming literally, but is this necessarily so?
